Lamongan, January 24, 2025 – Third-semester Animal Systematics students conducted a field experiment at the Tikung Village Reservoir. This activity, guided by lecturer Badrut Tamam, aimed to further familiarize themselves with members of the Aves class and understand important characteristics for their identification and classification.
This experiment was part of a hands-on, experiential learning effort in the open air. Students utilized various tools such as binoculars, monoculars, cameras, and bird identification guidebooks to observe bird species around the reservoir. Using these observation methods, they recorded various characteristics of the birds, from feather color and beak shape to flight patterns, which are key to the identification process.
In addition to visual observations, students also documented the identified birds through photography and descriptive notes. Several bird species encountered during the experiment served as the basis for further discussion in analyzing taxonomic differences and interspecific relationships.
According to Badrut Tamam, this experiment provided an opportunity for students to apply the theory they had learned in class to real-life situations. "By going directly into the field, students can better understand bird diversity and how to identify them based on their morphological and ecological characteristics," he said.
This activity also aims to raise students' awareness of the importance of bird and habitat conservation. By understanding more about the diversity of birds, students are expected to contribute to environmental conservation efforts, particularly in maintaining the ecosystem around the Tikung Village Reservoir. It is hoped that through this practicum, students will gain not only academic understanding but also hands-on experience that will strengthen their expertise in biology and conservation.
