UMLA Students Discuss Global Strategies to Address Climate Change

Lamongan, January 2, 2024 – The Budi Utomo Auditorium of Muhammadiyah University of Lamongan (UMLA) hosted a guest lecture entitled "Addressing Climate Change: Strategic Mitigation Efforts for a Sustainable Future." The event, which ran from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB), was attended by students from various first-semester study programs, including Elementary School Teacher Education, Informatics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Medical Informatics, Physics, and Biology.

The keynote speaker was Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Safaa Najah Saud Al-Humairi, Deputy Dean for Research from Management and Science University, Malaysia. The opening session included remarks from the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Technology, and Education at UMLA, Eko Handoyo, M.Kom., moderated by Rohmat, S.T., M.Sc., a lecturer in the same faculty.

The seminar covered various important topics related to climate change:

  1. Basics of Climate Change Science Dr. Safaa explained the difference between weather and climate and the factors that influence climate change, such as human activities that increase the greenhouse effect.
  2. Impacts of Climate Change: The discussion covered the serious impacts of climate change, including extreme weather, sea level rise, glacier melting, biodiversity loss, and threats to food security.
  3. Climate Change Mitigation Strategies: The speaker emphasized the importance of reducing emissions through energy efficiency, the use of renewable energy, sustainable transportation, and the implementation of carbon pricing.
  4. Adaptation to Climate Change: Measures such as water conservation, climate-smart agriculture, coastal protection, and disaster preparedness were key focuses of this session.
  5. International Cooperation and Policy: Dr. Safaa reviewed the crucial role of the Paris Agreement, the 2050 net-zero target, and the $100 billion annual climate finance commitment for developing countries.
  6. Nature-Based Solutions: The final topic discussed measures such as reforestation, carbon capture, and other clean technologies to address the impacts of climate change.

This seminar is a crucial opportunity to raise students' awareness of climate change and the steps they can take for mitigation and adaptation. The event concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, which gave participants the opportunity to engage directly with Dr. Safaa. "Climate change is our shared responsibility," Dr. Safaa said in her closing remarks, emphasizing the importance of individual and collective contributions to maintaining the sustainability of the planet.
