Lamongan, December 17, 2024 – Fifth-semester Biology students from the Faculty of Science, Technology, and Education (FSTP) at the University of Muhammadiyah Lamongan (UMLA) participated in a molecular-based halal testing training. The training took place on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, and adhered to the international standard ISO/TS 20224-3:2020. The training was facilitated by Mr. Ainul Mahbubillah, a lecturer in Biology at UMLA, who provided direct guidance to the students.

This training was designed to provide an understanding and practical experience of molecular-based halal testing methods. The main steps covered by the students included:

  1. DNA Isolation Students learned the process of extracting DNA from meat samples, which is the first step in identifying ingredients.

  2. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) In this stage, students practiced DNA amplification techniques to specifically detect the presence of certain ingredients, such as non-halal ingredients.

  3. Gel Electrophoresis Students learned the technique of separating DNA based on size using gel electrophoresis, a crucial step in molecular analysis.

  4. Gel Visualization In the final stage, the electrophoresis results were observed to identify the contents of the tested material. Students were trained to carefully read and analyze gel patterns.

Mr. Ainul Mahbubillah, a lecturer from the UMLA Biology Department who assisted in the training, stated that this activity was an effort to improve students' competency in molecular biology. "Our students must be able to understand and master cutting-edge technology relevant to societal needs, especially in the halal sector. This is an important step in preparing them to compete in the workforce," he said.

This training reflects the University of Muhammadiyah Lamongan's commitment to preparing students to face the challenges of the professional world. Furthermore, this activity also aims to support the halal industry in providing products with guaranteed halal certification through methods that comply with international standards.
